Descaling

Scale happens when the hardness of your water lays down on the parts of your coffee maker. We can remove this using many methods, I have used Dezcal, Durgol, Vinegar and Citrus acid

Dezcal is a citrus based descaler, comes as a powder in bulk or single serve packages. Here is a link to a video I made on using Dezcal.

Durgol is a liquid descaler, that you dilute from the full power. Here is the video that I made showing the use of Durgol.

Vinegar is another way to remove scale, I have done it in my old machines many years ago, but not since I discovered Dezcal, and certainly not since |I bought my Technivorm and Silvia. If you want to use vinegar because you have it, go for it, it works too, but the flavor left behind may take extra rinsing.

I have not used Citric acid for descaling, but I have it on good authority (James Hoffman) that it works just fine. Since it is the base of Dezcal, which I do use, it makes sense to me that it will work just fine. It comes bulk, so there will be some more maths involved in the mixing.

Information about scale:

Calcium carbonate is the hardness in the water, when it lays down on your machine, its what we call limestone scale. I have seen limescale, but that word seems strange to me.
