The Technivorm Moccamaster (TVMM) is a hand crafted coffee maker that is known for making an excellent cup of coffee. with a five year warranty, simple switches and a thermal carafe, the TVMM will last for many years.
When I was using a Bodum French Press (BFP) to make all my coffee, I began to create a list of needs for my next coffee dripper. This is what they were and how the TVMM delivered.
Fast. Our old coffee maker was slow. Really slow, in fact I used to joke that you could start the brew cycle then go shower and get ready for work and cut the grass…. and it MIGHT be ready. I think it actually took about 15-20 minutes to brew a pot. When I felt it was taking to long to brew a pot of coffee, I actually did not know a whole lot about extraction and brew times. I know a bit more now. The TVMM brews a 1.25l pot of coffee in about 6 minutes. This is good.
Simple. We had a complicated machine at work, and it always seemed to be on the fritz. I wanted a machine that had no timers and no clock. The TVMM has a rocker switch for on off. There is a limit switch that detects the presence of the carafe and a float switch that detects the level of water in the holding tank.
Capacity. The BFP brewed about 800ml and I found I was having to brew two sometimes three pots back to back, and with the amount of cleanup required this was quite tedious. I desired a coffee maker that would produce at least 8 cups of coffee. The TVMM has a 1.25l capacity. Depending on the size of your coffee cup, this is any where from a 10 to 5 cup brewer. If your cup is 4oz you get 10cups, and if your cup is a large mug, you get 5 cups.
Carafe. I found that having a hot plate caused the coffee sitting on it to start tasting bitter after time. I remembered how when I worked in the quick food service industry we used zojirushi thermos and I could drink liters of coffee all night long and the only change was that it slowly cooled off. The TVMM I chose has a carafe. that being said, they also have hotplate versions if that is your bag.
Here is a video that I made discussing my thought on the TVMM after ten years use.
